The Sharp AQUOS line has really set the standard for LCD panel performance, producing some of the best flat panel LCD TVs on the market for a few years now. Not content to rest at the top, the 2006 Sharp AQUOS LCD TV lineup boasts even more improvements that are sure to impress. We'll take a look at the standout features of these new LCD TVs before they hit the market.

New Multi-Pixel Technology

While flat panel LCD TVs have always boasted better viewing angles than any rear-projection technology, plasmas have traditionally had the upper hand. With the new AQUOS line, Sharp claims to have improved viewing angles by up to 60% with a proprietary Multi-Pixel LCD panel. In the new Sharp LCD's, each pixel in the panel is divided into two sections, which Sharp claims will deliver better color saturation and brightness at horizontal viewing angles up to 176 degrees.

Sharp "Quick-Shoot" Technology

The Sharp AQUOS LCD televisions have always outperformed their competitors when it comes to response time, and Sharp is touting their 2006 models to be the best yet. We've seen a lot of so-called "fast response" LCD monitors with response times measured up to 20ms, but the 2006 AQUOS models claim an incredible response time of 6ms! This should really produce a true film-like smoothness on both the D40U and D90U models with DVD and HDTV material, and may make the Sharp D90U flagship series a top choice for PC and console gaming as well.

The 2006 Sharp AQUOS Lines

The two major lines introduced by Sharp this year look to carry on the impressive tradition set by previous AQUOS LCD TV lines, and introduce some new picture improvements as well. Both the D90U and D40U series feature integrated HDTV tuners, Dual HDMI digital interfaces and the Sharp Advanced Super View LCD TV panels with the improved Quick-Shoot and new Multi-Pixel technologies.

Sharp AQUOS D90U Series: 1080p Performance

With their striking titanium finish, The flagship D90U series is the top-of-the-line contender and includes the largest LCD TV currently available—a truly astounding 65" LCD TV! The 65, 57, and 37" models feature 1920 x 1080p resolution LCD panels—the highest HDTV spec. available. All the models come equipped with the dual HDMI inputs and integrated HDTV tuners, with a CableCARD slot and TV Guide Onscreen programming guide included on the LC-65D90U and LC-57D90U. The D90U series also features dual IEEE 1394 "FireWire" inputs and DVI inputs for your PC. Every model in the D90U line except the 32" model features detachable bottom-mounted speakers.

Four-Wavelength Backlight System

Perhaps the most interesting development in the AQUOS D90U models is the new Four Wavelength Backlight System. In their early days, LCD televisions were far overshadowed by plasma TVs when it came to color performance, but the newest development from Sharp may change the way you think about LCD TV. Sharp's flagship D90U line features a new Four-Wavelength Backlight system that adds a vivid crimson red to the traditional three-wavelength Red, Green and Blue LCD backlight. The result is a vast improvement in natural color reproduction—without the oversaturation that tends to feature in LCD TV panels. This advance in the Sharp AQUOS LCD TV line should really put these televisions on a par with the best plasma TVs when it comes to color performance.

Sharp AQUOS D40U Series: Sleek New Style

While the new D40U models don't offer the cutting-edge 1080p resolution of the D90U line, they make up for it with some really impressive design. The lush piano black cabinetry of the AQUOS D40U LCD TVs would look right at home on a pedestal in the Met; imagine how they will look in your living room! Thankfully, Sharp hasn't neglected the substance behind these beauties either: they all feature HDTV performance with a 1366 x 768 contrast ratio (720p), high contrast, and the "Quick-Shoot"-driven 6ms response time and wide viewing angles that should really make this 2006 Sharp lineup a hit. You can't take the speakers off, but when they look like this, why would want to? I really think you'll struggle to find a better-looking TV set this year than the Sharp AQUOS D40U models.
